Newry and Mourne District Council are taking part in Ireland’s largest ever tree planting event this Friday. One Million Trees in One Day is a charity, not-for-profit, cross-border, community and environmental initiative which will plant one million young, native trees at many different sites across Ireland in 24 hours.
Planting will begin at 12pm this Friday 22nd March and can run to 12pm on Friday 23rd March.
Newry and Mourne District Council, along with hundreds of local volunteers, will plant 5000 native trees at four sites; the Flagstaff, Carnagat park, Heather park and Kilmorey park.
Danielle Begley, Biodiversity Officer for the Council explained, “these trees will be of value from the moment they are planted and well beyond any of our lifetimes. Ireland is one of the least forested countries in Europe; with climate change predicted to cost many billions over coming years, each tree planted will soak up three months worth of the Carbon dioxide produced by an average person”.
Many hands make light work so if you would like to get involved with the planting day please contact Danielle Begley, Newry and Mourne Biodiversity Officer on 028 30313100 or email Danielle.begley@newryandmourne.co.uk
