Work has started on a £200,000 street lighting replacement scheme on Abbey Way in Newry.
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins announced the project today which will see 30 street lighting columns replaced with modern energy efficient LEDs along the route from Margaret Street to the junction at Kilmorey Street.
Minister Kimmins said the investment demonstrates her commitment to investing in and improving the road network, which is vital for connecting businesses and communities. She added: "This is a substantial investment for the Newry area which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users. I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."
The scheme will also include replacement of the underground cable network alongside the installation of the new LED lighting columns.
The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management in order to minimise inconvenience to the public. All work involving lane closures will be carried out during off peak times Monday to Friday between 09:30 and 16:00. Some delays may be expected and additional time should be allowed when planning any journeys.
Subject to favourable weather conditions, the works will be substantially complete by Friday 30 January 2026, however the Department will keep the public informed of any change.
