Plans for an active travel corridor linking two Markethill schools have been confirmed by the Department for Infrastructure, with local political representatives welcoming the announcement. The proposed corridor along the Mowhan Road will connect Markethill Primary School and Markethill High School, incorporating walking and cycling infrastructure and controlled crossings.

ABC, Councillor Bróna Haughey and Newry and Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan, welcomed the confirmation of the scheme.

Cllr Haughey said: "We particularly welcome confirmation from the Department for Infrastructure of the development of an active travel corridor along the Mowhan Road, including walking and cycling infrastructure and controlled crossings linking Markethill Primary School and Markethill High School.

"This is a very positive step forward that will improve road safety, support active travel and provide safer access for children and young people travelling to and from school each day."

Cllr Haughey also acknowledged the role of Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins in securing the commitment: "We thank Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins for her commitment to road safety and for visiting the school, which has helped secure this important commitment of work.

"Sinn Féin will continue working with the Minister, local schools and all relevant stakeholders to help deliver these important safety improvements for the wider community."

Newry and Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan added: "This is a welcome investment for the Markethill area and an important step in improving safety and connectivity for local families, pupils and staff. Safe and accessible active travel infrastructure is vital in encouraging more young people to walk and cycle to school."
