Carlingford has cemented its status as a top winter destination after Adventure Lights at Skypark attracted an estimated 30,000 visitors to the village during the off-peak season, delivering a major boost to local businesses across Co. Louth.
The large-scale festive experience, operated by the McArdle Adventure Group, has drawn families, couples and day-trippers from across Ireland and overseas. Many visitors have extended their stay to enjoy Carlingford's accommodation, dining and retail offerings, transforming what is traditionally a quieter period into a time of renewed vitality for the village.
Tom McArdle, CEO of McArdle Adventure Group, said the event has exceeded expectations in terms of its wider local impact. "We are really delighted with the response to Adventure Lights this year," he said. "What's most encouraging is seeing how people are making a full day or even a full weekend of it. Visitors are coming early, spending time in the village, staying overnight, and really experiencing everything Carlingford has to offer."
According to the McArdle Adventure Group, the increased visitor numbers have translated into tangible benefits for local hotels, guesthouses, cafés, pubs, restaurants and retailers. Accommodation providers in and around Carlingford have reported strong demand, while food and beverage businesses have experienced increased footfall both before and after the evening event.
Local hospitality and retail businesses throughout the village have benefited from visitors arriving early to soak up the festive atmosphere, enjoy lunch or dinner and do Christmas shopping before heading to Skypark. This has reinforced Carlingford's appeal as a complete destination rather than a single-attraction visit.
Enhancements to the Adventure Lights experience this year, including expanded food offerings and upgraded visitor facilities, have further encouraged longer dwell times and repeat visits. Businesses along the route to Skypark and within the village centre have continued to see strong custom from attendees throughout the season.
"The real success of Adventure Lights is that it supports jobs, local businesses, and confidence in winter tourism," McArdle added. "Events like this show that Carlingford can thrive year-round, not just during the traditional peak months."
