A lot of people are doing great work for charity during lockdown and it certainly is vitally needed.

Two young Camlough girls are doing their bit, taking on a cycling challenge to help raise funds for Head Injury Support (HIS), a fantastic centre for survivors of acquired brain injury in Newry.

Aibha Loughran from Camlough who is just 6 year old, with the help of her sister Lara, 4,  have launched ABC - Aibha’s Bicycle Challenge and all proceeds will go to the charity based in Kildare Street in the city.

Aibha has just learned to ride her bike without stabilisers a few weeks ago and is cycling as far as she can every day in June to raise awareness of the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet.

When Aibha’s aunty Sinéad was the same age she fell off her bike. She had run out of the house without her helmet. Sinead’s fall was not like most scrapes’ children have. She hit her head and caused a bleed on her brain.

Sinead was so lucky to have been treated quickly and despite needing more than 10 years of treatment and rehabilitation she made a full recovery. Despite being so lucky it had a profound effect on the King family. Over the years Sinead and her mum have campaigned about the importance of wearing cycling helmets - and now it is Aibha’s turn.

Head Injury Support helps people living locally with acquired brain injury, who aren’t as lucky as Sinead was. This can happen through car accidents, falls at work, assaults, stress, any number of reasons - so it can happen to anyone.

Aibha and Lara  hope the Bicycle Challenge will raise awareness of the fantastic work HIS do.
