Eleven year old Newry boy Alfie Pentony and his dog Gizmo are planning to walk a mile during every day of Lent. It may not sound like much but it is an incredible challenge considering that Alfie who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy was told he would be in a wheelchair by the time he was ten!
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. His parents Jamie and Coleen founded the 'Fight for Alfie' charity in 2016 to help raise funds for treatment and have organised some real fun events over the years.
Funds raised in this years intiiative Alfies Dog Jog will be used for his treatment and also to help raise awareness of the disorder.
The fundraiser will start on Ash Wednesday 14 February and Alfie and his beloved dog plan to complete a mile every day until Easter Saturday 30 March when they will finish at the USPCA in Newry.
The family would love as many people as possible to join with him a walk your own mile every day as well as join him on his last day at the USPCA. If you or your children would like to get involved, while taking your dog walking you can register at www.fightforalfie.co.uk for £10 and you will receive your goodie pack and sponsor card. Those without a dog are also encouraged to sign up too and walk with your friends or whatever suits.
Alfies mother Colleen said "Alfie is such an incredible boy who has shown so much resilience his whole life with everything he has already done along with what his wee body goes through, and now he's going to do this, totalling in 40 miles, absolutely amazing for any kid with Duchenne to even try this"
