Eleven year old Newry boy Alfie Pentony completed his 40 mile challenge today at the USPCA headquarters in Newry. Alfie and his dog Gizmo have been walking a mile a day over lent, an incredible achievement for a boy with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Today he was joined on his walk by family, friends and supporters. Funds raised from the walk are going towards the charity Fight for Alfie.
Speaking about Alfie’s achievement his Dad Jamie said “Alfie is a massive animal lover. He especially loves dogs. His wee dog Gizmo is so important to him as he negotiates life with this horrendous diagnosis. He really wanted to include his dog in his efforts to help raise money to cover his treatments. We are so proud of him and his attempts to put up the best fight possible against Duchenne. He is the most determined young boy in the world with a heart of gold. We can’t think of a better way to finish this challenge than out at the USPCA to celebrate with friends and family.”
USPCA Spokesperson “We are so honoured that Alfie and Gizmo have chosen the USPCA, Newry as the finish line for this incredible Dog Jog challenge! After meeting this superstar, we could see how confident, kind and remarkably determined he is and with Gizmo by his side for support, we knew there would be no stopping him!”
Duchenne is a form of Muscular Dystrophy that causes muscles to deteriorate and break down. DMD is the most frequently occurring and one of the most rapidly progressing childhood neuromuscular disorders which primarily affects boys.
