Ní Chuilín launches ‘An Tobar  Líofa’ - Gaeltacht Scholarship pilot scheme!

The Culture Minister has launched ‘An Tobar Líofa’ – a pilot scholarship scheme which will support Líofa participants to continue learning Irish in the Donegal Gaeltacht this summer 2012.

Tá an t-Aire Cultúrtha i ndiaidh ‘An Tobar Líofa’ a sheoladh – clár píolótach a thugann tacaíocht do rannpháirtithe Líofa leanúint ar aghaidh lena gcuid foghlama i nGaeltacht Dhún na nGall an samhradh seo, 2012.

The Líofa 2015 project aims to encourage 5000 people from all walks of life across the north to sign up to becoming fluent in Irish by 2015.  At present, 2044 have joined the Líofa project, far exceeding the initial target of 1000 people to take up the challenge.

Is é an sprioc atá leis an tionscadal Líofa ná 5,000 a spreagadh, ó achan réim den saol i dtuaisceart na hÉireann, chun líofacht sa Ghaeilge a bhaint amach faoin bhliain 2015.  Go dtí seo tá, 2050 i ndiaidh clárú le Líofa, i bhfad níos mó ná an chéadsprioc de 1000 a leagadh síos ar dtús.

Carál Ní Chuilín explained how the pilot scheme will work: “For many people one of the highlights and one of the most effective tools for learning Irish is to attend an Irish language course in the Gaeltacht region, absording the language in the heart of native speakers and communities.

“By developing this pilot scholarship scheme I want the Gaeltacht experience to be open to as many people as possible.  An Tobar Líofa is targeted on the basis of objective need at people whose attendance at the Gaeltacht would otherwise have been financially difficult.  Scholarships of a maximum of £570 per applicant will be available.

“I offer every encouragement to those who are considering their first steps to fluency. The willingness and desire to learn Irish is strong, and the appeal of the language is broader today than it has been at any stage of its recent history.”

Lean Leat go Líofa 2015!  Follow through to fluency 2015!
