Detective Sergeant Brannigan said: “Shortly before 6:50pm, it was reported that a man wearing a green coat and a grey scarf entered the shop in the area. He then threatened a female member of staff and demanded money. He made off towards another business premises close by with a sum of money. The female member of staff was left badly shaken, but not injured following the incident.
“The male was arrested inside the other premises on suspicion of two counts of robbery. One of these was in relation to an armed robbery at an off-licence in the Warrenpoint Road area of Newry on Monday 30th December, in which a sum of money was taken during the incident. He is currently in police custody.
“Enquiries are continuing and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed either of the incidents on the 30th or 31st December to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1401 31/12/19. Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”
