Police have made an arrest after a car was broken into at O'Neill Avenue in Newry on Monday night.
Items stolen included a bank card.
In a statement Police said "Following some enquiries we identified a suspect who was promptly arrested and remains in custody this evening. Please continue to report suspicious behaviour on 101."
Councillor Valerie Harte has said that those involved in the vandalising of a car and subsequent theft of items from it were ‘heartless’.
The Newry City Councillor made her comments after speaking to family members of the victim. Cllr Harte said “I have just spoken with the mother of a young man from O’Neill Avenue here in Newry who has been left traumatised after discovering that his car had been broken into last night and thrashed and items stolen from it“.
The local Councillor continued “This young man had only started a new job yesterday and to go out to find that this had happened this morning is deplorable. Once again a community has been violated by heartless thieves, we don’t need these acts of wanton vandalism in our communities”.
Concluding the Newry City Councillor said “The Ballinacraig Community Association have spoken with the PSNI and have been assured that patrols will be stepped up in the area. I would also appeal for all residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity”.
