Arrests in City following linked incidents

Two men have been arrested following a hit and run, an assault and damage to property in Newry on Monday.

Constable Caroline Bell explained: “Around 12.30pm on Monday, 9 February, we received a report of a hit and run road traffic collision on Dublin Road. It was reported that a white Volkswagen Polo collided with a black Vauxhall Vivaro van at the roundabout at the top of Dublin Road. A female passenger in the van sustained minor injuries. The white Volkswagen Polo drove off onto the A1, heading south.

“At 3.30pm on the same day we attended a serious assault on Bridge Street. A 50 year old man was assaulted by two males who were armed with hurls and who were travelling in a black Vauxhall Vivaro van. The 50 year old man sustained injuries to his head and legs and was taken to hospital.

“We circulated details of the vehicle which was located around 6.20pm in the Newry area. A 53 year old man was arrested for GBH with intent, possession of an offensive weapon, disorderly behaviour and obstructing police. A 41 year old man was arrested at a later time for possession of an offensive weapon.

“At 6pm on 9 February we received a report of windows damaged at a house in Parkview Drive and at 7pm it was reported that the rear window screen of a grey Citroen van, parked at a house in Dominic Street, was damaged with a brick."
