Slieve Gullion Courtyard are hosting an awareness and informational day on the Barn Owl on the 9th of March.
The Action for Barn Owls project, co-funded by the Ulster Wildlife Trust and the NIEA is designed to increase public awareness of the factors contributing to the decline of NI's barn owl population and to implement mitigation measures such as erecting nest boxes and encouraging landowners to manage foraging habitat for barn owls.
If you have ever seen one of these birds, you can count yourself very lucky. With heart-shaped face, buff back and wings and pure white underparts, the barn owl is a distinctive and much-loved countryside bird. Widely distributed across Ireland and the UK, and indeed the world, this bird has suffered declines through the 20th century and is thought to have been adversely affected by organochlorine pesticides such as DDT in the 1950s and '60s.
The Ring of Gullion Officer together with Newry and Mourne’s Action for Biodiversity Officer have invited speakers from the Ulster wildlife trust to tell us about the barn owl project and how we can all help.
On the 9th March between 2pm and 4pm, you can find out more about this nocturnal bird at the Slieve Gullion Courtyard. Students from The Clanrye Group based at Slieve Gullion Courtyard have been working hard to cut the wood into flat packs for the groups to assemble your own tree top barn owl box to take home with you
