Barriers that were placed along the bridges over Newry Canal and the Clanrye River as part of an active travel route that was started in January 2022 will remain in place till the summer. In a query by Newry.ie a Department for Infrastructure spokesperson said "Temporary barriers are in place on the bridge at Carnbane as work is to be completed to finish the edge of the active travel pathway. The contractor has programmed this work to be completed during the summer 2023 period."
The pathway between the Mourne Country Roundabout and Fiveways/ McCanns Corner is part of a route taking walkers and cyclists from the roundabout at the Mourne Country up to the turn off for Newry Railway Station. Work is almost complete on the second stretch up to the train station although traffic lights that are planned for the project are not yet in place.
It is hoped that more active travel routes will be put in place in Newry city by the DfI but there are no immediate plans to do so.
