Local engineering firm, FM Environmental have played their part in keeping some of the residents of Belfast Zoo cool during the recent heatwave while at the same time enhancing their living conditions.

Last month the Newry-based company completed a major upgrade to the water treatment plant at the zoo’s sea lion pool just in time for the summer tourist season and the unprecedented warm weather.

The 500m3 pool is home to three resident sea lions but with the enhanced water quality Belfast Zoo now hopes to commence a breeding programme to increase their sea lion population. The upgrade work included the installation of a new saltwater chlorine generation system along with the replacement of filtration media and the installation of new recirculation pumps and UV disinfection equipment. The plant produces saltwater mimicking the natural seawater environment sealions are accustomed to.

FM Environmental’s work at Belfast Zoo follows another recent water treatment plant upgrade by the Company, this time for Northern Ireland Water on Rathlin Island. The £1M investment, completed during the challenging restrictions of the last 18 months, provides a more modern and robust water treatment facility for the residents of Rathlin. Commenting on the projects FM Environmental Contracts Manager, Martin McKiverigan stated: “Both Rathlin Island and Belfast Zoo used advanced water treatment technologies to enhance their water quality and, given the recent heatwave, I’m pleased to say the sea lions were as happy as the islanders with the end result.”
