Earlier this month members of Bessbrook Young at Heart Walking and Craft group visited the Apple Cider Company Ballinteggart Orchard Farm at Drumnasoo Portadown and were given a guided tour of the cider making process on site.
The trip was one of a number of events planned with thanks to funding of £9966 from the National Lottery Community fund. Over 30 members of the group were present and Philomena Morrow, Chairperson, Bessbrook Young at Heart thanked the owners of the farm for their interesting and informative explanation of the origins of cider making and thanked all those responsible for organising the tour.
After the factory visit the members were treated to a tour of the Apple Blossom in the Portadown, Richhill and Loughgall areas.

The majority of members of Bessbrook Young at Heart are retired older people. The predominant age is over 65 and there are a number well into their 70’s. Some live alone and are widows or widowers. The opportunity to meet on a regular basis helps offset the adverse effects of rural exclusion and loneliness. There are over 50 members in the group which has gradually returned to pre Covid 19 numbers.
This Community Group provides an ideal opportunity for people to get out and about, meet other people, share their own worries and concerns and be listened to by others. The group is a very happy mixed community group whose members all look forward to their Monday meetings and planned outings.
All projects are undertaken for the benefit of the members and activities include walking and knitting craft, talks and tours, gentle core body strength exercises (with advice and support from the Health Promotion Agency).
The group seek to encourage older people to join and encourage them to be more active by getting out and about and to discover that even a little exercise each day will help them feel better about themselves and improve their physical health, mental health and a social well being.
The Young at Heart Group is open to anyone over the age of 50.
