Border Communities Against Brexit have issued a statement on the progression of the Protocol Bill. The campaigning organisation believe that the new UK Prime Minister will override any amendments made in the House of Lords. They also believe that those promoting this Bill need to be honest about the consequences flowing from it, as thousands of jobs are at risk.
In the statement a spokesperson said "The vital reason we have the Protocol in the first place is due to the 40 plus million vehicles that cross the border annually. This Bill will wreck business & introduce border checks.
"There is a belief that the Lords will amend this Bill & somewhat fix it. This approach is wrong, as Truss will override these amendments. Tory’s & ERG, together with the DUP & UUP are seeking to create havoc here by supporting this Bill."
The spokesperson added "The U.K. Gov has COMPLETELY refused to negotiate, instead they are willfully breaking International Law, trashing the Good Friday Agreement, and in particular seeking a Trade War with the EU to improve their electoral chances in England.
"We see the NI SoS, and others deliberately mislead & falsely depicted only negatively the Protocol. These actions are disgraceful & should be called out. This Bill will wreck business & create thousands of job losses.
"Recent data (from the CSO) has shown how successfully trade is flowing between these Islands, with imports from NI to the South up by €357 million compared to 2021 and trade from South to North up by €586 million in the same period."
