Border Communities Against Brexit are concerned we could be taken towards a hard border on the island.

A Spokesperson for Border Communities Against Brexit have expressed their concern that the British Government could be set to tear up the Irish Protocol which they believe is the very foundation of the UK / EU Trade Deal.

The Spokesperson said "The utter disregard that the British Government showed towards Border Communities since June 2016 is once again highlighted by their utter disregard for the consequences of their actions, which could result in a Hard Border on the Island of Ireland.

"The firm promises made to respect the Good Friday Agreement amount to a pack of lies, they now stand accused of wilfully and deliberately smashing the Protocol, and therefore breaking International Law, and taking us towards a Hard Border on our Island."

Border Communities Against Brexit point out that 54 out of 90 members of the Assembly support the Protocol, but that yet again the British Government has no regard for the will of the majority of the people living in the North of Ireland.

The Spokesperson added "The Irish Government must stand solidly behind the majority of the people in the North, the Members of the Assembly who support the Protocol must firmly reject what the British Government is about to do, but most importantly of all, the European Union must act in a robust and comprehensive manner as soon as this legislation is laid in the House of Commons, to show to the UK Government that it can and will take decisive action to protect its International Agreement and the hundreds of thousands of EU Citizens living in the North."

The group are calling for effective and wide-ranging economic tariffs on the UK car industry and financial services, in the event of the legislation being tabled.

They add that they will use their extensive contacts across the EU institutions in the time ahead to deliver this message and believe the British Government should instead of taking unilateral action, be meeting with their EU counterparts in the Joint Committee to seek a resolution immediately.
