The Winter Sessions for Seniors – Oidhreacht an Iúir, held in Newry Bosco Club, Water Street, are scheduled to conclude with two interesting activities.
The Wednesday night event for tonight, ‘Plain Trains & Automobiles’, will discuss aspects of the history of transport in Newry and District.
As usual, participants will experience an eclectic range of historical images and artefacts.
The sessions, which have emerged from a new GAA clubs’ initiative to cater for the over-60s in their catchment areas, have been a great success for the Bosco and the Newry Branch of Comhaltas Uladh and they will culminate in a rare opportunity for participants to visit the now unused Armagh Women’s Gaol. The Irish Language classes for Mentors and Juniors in the Bosco will also run for another two weeks.
Although this joint Bosco-Gaelic League 12 week project is due to complete in a fortnight, Anita Gallagher, the newly appointed Heritage Officer for the proposed Gaeláras Mhic Ardghail, will organise a special St. Patrick’s Week local history, bilingual exhibition in the Bosco agus i mBunscoil an Iúir based on the theme of ‘Newry Bottlers and Distillers’ and this will be advertised in the Newry and Mourne District Council’s Seachtain na Gaeilge promotional literature.
