Speaking after attending the Newry, Mourne and Down housing conference, MP Mickey Brady has said his party is committed to tackling the housing crisis in Ireland.
The Newry and Armagh MP said: “Today my party colleagues, Oonagh Hanlon, Aoife Finnegan, Valerie Harte, Cathy Mason and I, attended a housing conference to identify the needs and challenges across Newry, Mourne and Down in relation to housing.
“Sinn Féin is committed to tackling the housing crisis in Ireland and my party colleague Deirdre Hargey has delivered the biggest housing programme in a generation to ensure workers and families across the north have access to somewhere they can call home.
“Addressing the demand for rural housing was one of the discussions held today and as someone who represents a largely rural constituency, I fully understand the need for rural areas to have adequate housing.
"Minister Hargey has outlined that delivering more homes where they are needed is her priority, and that includes for our rural communities.
Sinn Féin chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down district council, Cathy Mason also commented "Across the district the lack of proper access to wastewater infrastructure is a massive obstacle to the further building of homes within the area with applications being held up or shelved completely because of lack of access to the Sewage system.
“There are also serious issues in relation to the planning system that must be addressed to ensure that social housing is able to be built with as few barriers as possible for workers and families across the island.”
