The traffic lights at Bridge Street in Newry are now operational again following several weeks of them being out of order. The junction, one of the busiest in the city serves The Quays Shopping Centre and the Buttercrane Shopping Centres as well as the Lidl car park.
MLA Liz Kimmins spoke out about the fault. The Newry and Armagh MLA said "It’s unacceptable that the traffic lights at The Quays/Buttercrane have still not been repaired, despite numerous reports from my office to DFI.
"This is one of the busiest junctions in the city and it is only a matter of time before there is an accident. I have emailed the Dept's Permanent Secretary to make it clear that this delay is unacceptable and that these traffic lights must be fixed as a matter of priority."
It's believed the flooding at Halloween affected the signals and motorists have carefully progressed through the lights since then.
Several people have observed that traffic seemed to flow better without the traffic lights in operation with less queues although the fault made crossing the road for pedestrians much more difficult. Regardless normal service has now resumed.
