Rostrevor Swimmer Laurence McGivern has taken a Bronze Medal at the IPC World Swimming Championships in Parc Jean Drapeau, Montreal at the weekend. His win added to the total tally of eight medals for the Irish Team.
20 year old Laurence said “I’m absolutely delighted, going into the race I knew there were things I could improve on but I didn’t think it would turn out like that and a huge personal best, I cannot believe I’ve just won Bronze”
Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín congratulated Laurence as well as Bethany Firth from Seaforde. The minister said: “Almost one year on from the Paralympic Games, it is fantastic to once again see local athletes competing and succeeding at the very highest level.”
“Bethany and Laurence are remarkable athletes who continue to be an inspiration for us all. But their success is hard-earned. It is built on training, discipline and dedication, not to mention the support of coaches, friends and family.”
The IPC Championships ended at the weekend and saw over 650 of the world’s best swimmers from more than 60 countries taking part, including many Paralympic Games medallists.
Newry and Mourne Council congratulated Laurence who qualified for the finals of the 100 metre backstroke with a swim of 1.06.18 and then swam a lifetime best of 1.04.75 in the final itself.
Among the supporters for Team Ireland at the Championships were Laurence's parents, Gerard and Roisin.
