Write a commentMLA Justin McNulty has called for improved maintenance of electric charging points throughout Newry following reports that a number of them aren't working at present.
Mr McNulty said, "Every part of public policy is directed towards renewable energy and greener forms of transport. An ever-increasing number of local residents have made the move to electric vehicles. But these vehicles are only useful if there is the network of charging points both available and maintained across our area.
"In recent days I have been made aware of a number of problems with the Rapid E Charging Points across Newry. Some of the locations have been broken for a long period of time and it simply isn’t good enough. There are points at Hill Street, Monaghan Street, Bridge Street, Bagenal’s Castle, Fiveways and at the Train Station and they’re all broken. There are others as well.
"Over recent months I assisted in securing a project with the Department of Infrastructure which will see many more rapid charging points installed across the entire border region and this is much needed and welcomed investment. ESB are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the various charging points across this island and yet the maintenance, upkeep and repairs seems to be non-existent. If we are to meet government targets aimed at greener forms of transport, then we need to see the infrastructure built, maintained and repaired when necessary or people will not make the switch if there are doubts about reliability.
"I have raised by concerns with ESB and I hope that the existing charging points will be repaired very soon."
