Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty is calling for a public inquiry into the Dublin & Monaghan bombings, 50 years on from the atrocity that claimed the lives of 34 people and injured almost 300.
After asking the Justice Minister about what discussions she has had with her southern counterpart in relation to the Dublin Monaghan Bombings, the MLA said “Relatives of the victims of the Dublin & Monaghan bombings have been campaigning for truth and justice ever since and they have been stonewalled at every turn. Despite numerous appeals in London, the European Parliament, and the European Court of Human Rights, the UK Government has failed to release its files related to the bombings.
“Although the UVF claimed responsibility for the bombings, no-one has ever been charged in connection with the atrocities. In 2003, the Barron Report, which was hindered by a refusal by British authorities to disclose documents, found that collusion between security services and loyalist paramilitaries was likely.
“Inquiries in the South were hampered by the fact that they hold no jurisdiction over UK bodies. It is my very firm view that there needs to be a public enquiry launched in the North to identify the culprits and the collusion behind one of the bloodiest days of the Troubles."
