Traffic calming humps would not be appropriate for the village of Poyntzpass it was revealed in the answer to a question posed by Newry and Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan to the Minister for Infrastructure, Nichola Mallon who added that she would ask officials to carry out an assessment if other safety measures would be appropriate.
The Minister was asked if she would install traffic calming measures in Poyntzpass. Measures specified by Mr Boylan included a zebra crossing from the shop to the playpark along A27 Tandragee Road.
In reply the Minister said "I can advise that this location already has a number of traffic calming measures in place including: a 30mph speed limit; a village gateway sign with associated 30mph roundel on red surfacing; a pedestrian island; central hatching; school flashing warning signs with associated school ahead road marking on red surfacing and a Speed Indicator Device (SID) erected by the local council alerting drivers to their speed.
Ms Mallon continued "As this is an A-class road, the provision of vertical deflection (traffic calming humps) would not be appropriate; such measures are ordinarily restricted to residential streets/developments/estates and are not generally used on roads whose primary function is to facilitate through traffic.
"However, I have asked my officials to carry out an assessment to determine if any further safety measures would be appropriate, including the provision of a crossing."
