Call for vigilance after 8 thefts from vehicles in Newry

Newry police are investigating eight reports of thefts from parked vehicles at a number of locations across the city in recent days.

Sergeant Gracey said: “We have received eight reports since Tuesday ( 13th November ) of vehicles having been entered and items stolen and, unfortunately, the majority of these incidents have involved unlocked cars. The incidents have occurred throughout Newry and at this stage we believe they are all linked.

“We regularly offer crime prevention advice with regards to securing vehicles and removing any items from cars which may be of interest to criminals. I would like to take this opportunity to reinforce this message and again ask that members of the public lock their cars, remove valuables from their cars to a safe place and report any suspicious activity in their area to police immediately."

Newry City Councillor Valerie Harte commented “A number of residents had their possessions stolen from their vehicles, which is completely unacceptable for a the community and for those affected. The individuals who carried out these anti community acts have no place within our community. I would urge all residents and the wider communities to to be extra cautious and to protect their property and vehicles”.

Councillor Harte concluded “I would like to remind all residents of the importance of locking your vehicles at night, and ensuring that no valuable items are left on show or unattended.”
