Camlough-based charity The Brain Injury Foundation has launched a new book, Still I Am, a collection of stories, reflections and creative work by people living with brain injury. The launch event took place on 29 April, with members, carers, families, supporters, funders and community partners all attending to mark the occasion.
The book shares the lived experiences of brain injury survivors, exploring themes of strength, identity, recovery and resilience, giving members of the charity the opportunity to tell their own stories in their own words.
Olive, manager of The Brain Injury Foundation, spoke at the launch about what the project represents: "This book is more than a collection of stories. It is a celebration of identity, courage and the voices of people who are too often misunderstood or unheard. Still I Am shows that a brain injury may change a person's life, but it does not take away who they are."
The launch event also featured artwork by members, supported by Oonagh, Art Therapist at The Brain Injury Foundation, reflecting the role that creative expression can play in recovery, confidence-building and emotional wellbeing following brain injury.
The Still I Am project was funded by The Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Christine, Chair of The Brain Injury Foundation, said: "We are incredibly grateful to The Arts Council of Northern Ireland for making this project possible. Their support has allowed our members to share their stories in a way that is lasting, meaningful and empowering."
The Brain Injury Foundation, which is based in Camlough, supports people living with brain injury along with their carers and families through social, therapeutic, creative and community-based programmes. The charity works to reduce isolation, raise awareness and provide meaningful opportunities for members to rebuild confidence and connection.
The charity hopes the book will help raise wider awareness of the often hidden impact of brain injury, while celebrating the individuality and creativity of its members. Still I Am is available from The Brain Injury Foundation, with donations appreciated.
