Write a commentA Camlough man was one of two walkers who died following separate incidents in the Mourne Mountains today, 13 January.
Emergency services were involved in three incidents during the day and police also issued an alert this afternoon regarding strong winds in the area.
Inspector Frances McCullough said: “Police received a request for assistance after a male was reported to have fallen while walking on Wee Binnian shortly before midday and received a further request for assistance after a male was reported to have fallen while walking on Slieve Commedagh shortly before 1pm.
“Police and other emergency services responded but unfortunately both men died at the scene."
A third person was also rescued from the Mountains with a suspected broken ankle following a fall close to the Saddle at around 2.30pm.
Newry and Armagh MLA, Conor Murphy added “Reports that two people have tragically lost their lives whilst out in the Mourne Mountains is very sad. The news that a local resident from our community was one of those who lost his life has devastated us."
Mr Murphy added "thoughts and prayers of all are with both families as they come to terms with the news of these tragic deaths. The Camlough and indeed south Armagh communities will I have no doubt, be there for this locally bereaved family”
The Coast Guard Helicopter was also called out to the Cooley Mountains to help an injured walker earlier today.
