Tragedy struck in Newry City Centre early on Thursday night when well loved local man Kevin Carroll lost his life. Kevin will always be remembered for his kindness and wit and a talent for putting a smile on your face no matter what your mood.
As one friend summed it up in a Facebook tribute "just taking in the news that one of the most friendliest, funniest, caring, warm hearted person has passed away. R.I.P Kevin Carroll. You will be missed by so many. My thoughts are prayers are with his family at this sad time."
Local police had received a report of a man in Newry Canal and officers quickly attended the scene within two minutes of the alert.
An officer entered the canal and brought the man out of the water. Officers provided first aid and attempted to resuscitate the casualty using CRP until the arrival of ambulance personnel but unfortunately the male did not survive.
Newry and Mourne Area Commander, Chief Inspector Davy Beck said: "I wish to express my sympathy and that of my officers to the family circle and friends of the deceased. Once again we have been faced with a tragic incident in Newry and Mourne and it again emphasises the dangers associated with water.
"On receiving the initial call officers responded quickly to the scene and an officer entered the canal and bravely managed to bring the casualty out of the water however, despite this courageous action and the best efforts of my officers and medical staff the casualty did not survive."
