Newry woman Helena Young is organising a walk tomorrow 18 January along Newry Canal in memory of Ashling Murphy who was murdered in County Offaly last week while out jogging along the Grand Canal towpath near Tullamore.
School teacher Ashling was also a member of the National Folk Orchestra of Ireland and her death has sparked a nationwide outpouring of grief and anger at how this is allowed to happen. It also has highlighted the inequalities experienced by women when they are even just thinking about going out for a walk or jog. All the things they have to consider that men in the main don't especially around the time of day, making sure they're home before dark, not walking alone, staying in well lit areas to name a few.
Speaking about tomorrows walk Young said "As Ashling Murphy is laid to rest tomorrow I would like to organise a walk along our Canal to share our solidarity and sorrow with Ashling's family and friends."
The walk will start at 4pm from Canal Bank Car park adjacent to the Buttercrane Shopping Centre along Merchants Quay , around Sugar Island and finishing at Newry Town Hall.
