Write a commentA candle lit vigil and donation collection night has been organised by Óige Oirialla - Newry and Armagh's Sinn Fein Republican Youth group in aid of the refugee crisis ongoing across Europe and further afield at present. It takes place this Wednesday 9th September at 8pm at Newry Town Hall and all are welcome.
Items required include Tents, heavy duty bin bags, blankets, sleeping bags, warm winter coats (S&M sizes), scarves, hats, gloves, shoes, candles, torches, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, shaving foam, razors, tissue, bikes, puncture repair kits, medicines and first aid supplies.
Mark McLoughlin from the group said “We saw so many other towns and cities across and Ireland and indeed across the world holding vigils, donation drives and solidarity rallies and decided that Newry should do something similar.
“Newry is known for being a generous community and for coming together at times of social injustice and I look back at last year's Gaza rally outside the town hall and the huge numbers who turned out in solidarity with the people of Palestine and I hope this vigil will draw a similar if not bigger crowd.”
You can leave your donation items at a number of donation points across Newry, Mourne and Down (in the INF, Independent Club, and the WIN Industrial Estate to name a few).
Anyone with any items they wish to donate can bring them along on the night and they will be sent off to those who need them with all the other donations collected from across the district.
Conor Murphy, Megan Fearon and Mickey Brady will be speaking at the vigil.
