Write a commentNewry man Francie Rooney and his nephew John James Fallon are embarking on an ambitious fundraising drive for Fight for Sight next Tuesday the 23rd of June that should see them cycling to the highest mountain in each province before climbing each one.
That’s approximately 650 miles on the bike getting them to Slieve Donard in Ulster, Carrauntoohil in Munster, Lugnaquilla in Leinster and Mweelrea in Connaught.
The pair start in Newcastle at 8am on Tuesday coming and climb Donard progressing through the route over the following six days taking in Mweelrea, Carrauntoohil and lastly Lugnaquilla.
Fight for Sight is a charity that funds research into eye diseases and ailments! It's an organisation very close to the family as Francie’s grandson Caolan Nation has Reis Bucklers Corneal Dystrophy since birth, an eye disease that affects the Bowmans layer of the cornea and leads to very painful erosions for several days. RBCD is rare and is not cureable. Caolan needs lots of daily treatment, speciaist care and medical support to prevent this disease from stealing his sight!
Six year old Caolan lives in Liverpool with his mum Elaine Rooney. A keen sportsperson he plays soccer and cricket regularly and always bounces back from these painful episodes.
