This week Newry.ie is participating in 'Indie News Week' a UK wide event that aims to celebrate the independently owned and locally produced news sector. The event highlights the importance of trustworthy local news and helps raise awareness of the issues faced by these local outlets in helping keep you informed and empowered. Staffing and finance are two major uphill struggles for small local news outlets.
The Indie News Week campaign has been launched by the Public Interest News Foundation. With the tag-line 'No News is Bad News' the campaign points out that many areas are now 'news desert' with no local news source, something that can contribute to misinformation and a community that is not properly informed of what is happening locally.
Newry.ie keeps you up to date with the latest news and events as well as highlighting and celebrating our wonderful Newry people, businesses and organisations.
Additionally we use our voice to support local campaigns. In fact a blog post in 2013 on this site kickstarted the campaign for the Newry City Park, leading to the formation of campaigning group Newry 2020, which combined with pressure from the entire community and trade union sector saw Newry, Mourne and Down District Council unanimously agree to build a 15 acre city park at the Albert Basin in the city and former Finance Minister Conor Murphy allocate £16.2m for the project, which is expected to be complete by May 2027.
Currently we are supporting the community in demanding that the proposed bridge over Newry Ship Canal as part of the Southern Relief Road must be an opening one to make sure tall ships and yachts continue to access the heart of Newry.
Speaking about the event Newry.ie Editor Columba O'Hare said "Indie News Week is a fantastic way to showcase all the amazing independently run news outlets throughout the country. Many of these, like Newry.ie are run by just one or two individuals who are extremely passionate about their local communities. Personally I am extremely grateful to be able to reach so many people around the world, showcasing what is great about our City and endeavouring to make it better.
"Without our readers we would be nothing and I am extremely thankful for all the help and support from them over many years"
