Development work at Monkshill Municipal Cemetery was completed in December. Works commenced in April 2012 when there was an approximate burial capacity of 2 years but after the existing work there is a minimum of 10 years capacity.
Upgrade works were also carried out as part of this development to Monkshill cemetery. As part of these works, all flagged footpaths throughout the current burial spaces were lifted and replaced with concreted footpaths. These works were planned with visitors to the Cemetery in mind, with the view of making a visual as well as a safety improvement to the Cemetery
Mayor Cllr John McArdle said, ‘I would like to thank local residents for their co-operation and support during the works at Monkshill Cemetery. It was this support and the effort of Council staff that has enabled Newry and Mourne Council to expand and upgrade the cemetery to such a high standard. The development works have not only increased the burial capacity but also improved the visual and safety aspect of the cemetery’.
Mr Jim McCorry, Director of Technical & Leisure Services said, ‘I am pleased that Newry & Mourne Council has been able to improve on and extend the capacity of this final resting place for the people of Newry & Mourne”. He continued “It is an important part of the Council’s role in its service to the public, and the management and development of the Council’s Municipal Cemeteries is a vital and fundamental responsibility which is dealt with the utmost discretion by the Council Officers’ involved”.
