Cllr Valerie Harte, the 2023/2024 Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council will finish her term tonight following the Council's AGM. Speaking on her year in office Cllr Harte said "It has been a great honour and privilege to serve as chairperson this past year, and I am grateful to Sinn Fein, my SF Team, and my elected colleagues for trusting me with this important role.
"During my time as Chairperson, I have had the opportunity to explore the length and breadth of this district and witness the incredible work being done by numerous groups, organisations, and charities, as well as the economic growth of local businesses. It is truly inspiring to see so much good happening in our community."
Reflecting on the challenges confronted in the past year, Cllr Harte added "While the role has presented its challenges, particularly during the recent floods which had a devastating impact on all involved, a challenge not just for the Council but the many businesses and homeowners, standing with them and helping them in the cleanup was hard, but as Councillors, that’s what we are here for, stepping up when it's needed. I can safely say that I did that and will continue to support our community hereafter."
Cllr Harte thanked the Democratic Services team in the council, especially Sheila Kieran and Sarah Taggart. "Their unwavering support has been invaluable, and I have formed a strong friendship with them."
Raising £15.000 for local groups at her International Women's Day event was one of her highlights. "As a strong advocate for disability rights, being able to support my five chosen charities has been a meaningful experience that I will always cherish. I wish nothing but success for Down Right Brilliant, Life Changes Changes Lives, Newry All Stars Special Olympic Club, Sound Friends Deaf Children's Society, and Well Lane Warriors F.C and will continue to support them as and when they need."
Concluding Cllr Harte spoke of her family "Lastly, a huge thank you to my family for their unwavering love, encouragement, and ongoing support. Their dedication has been a constant source of strength since my initial election to the council in 2011. Despite the late nights, early mornings, and extended periods away from home, they have consistently motivated me to persevere through challenging times in my role.
"I look forward to taking a short break and getting back to being your Newry City Councillor”.
