Newry, Mourne and Down Council have issued a Tender for a Facilitator to manage a cross-community project redressing and challenging the legacy of John Mitchel.
It's part of the council's Building Positive Relations - Shared History and Culture Programme and it follows discussions locally in the past few months about the John Mitchel statue in John Mitchel Place, Newry and his historical support for slavery.
These items were brought to the fore following Black Lives Matter protests across the world after George Floyd was killed by Police in the USA earlier this year.
The Facilitator will design, develop and deliver a Cross-Community Project redressing and challenging the legacy of John Mitchel to improve Cross-Community Relations in the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council area.
The Council have secured £4.7m EU funding for the PEACE IV Local Authority Action Plan - Beyond Tolerance.
As lead partner, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council are responsible for the delivery of the PEACE IV action plan, which will promote peace and reconciliation in the local area focusing on three key themes: “Children and Young People”, “Shared Spaces and Services” and “Building Positive Relations”.
The Tender is open from now until 13 October.
