The First Citizen and Mayor of Newry & Mourne District, Cllr John Feehan, hosted a Civic reception for members of the Newry Rainbow Community in the Council Offices, Monaghan Row Newry.
The Mayor, on behalf of Newry & Mourne District Council, took the opportunity to recognise and pay tribute to the work of the Newry Rainbow Community and to pledge his, and his Council’s, support for the NRC’s plans for a dedicated centre in Newry City for the Gay & Lesbian community.
The work of the NRC in promoting good relations, diversity and equality, and being a recognisable voice for the LGBT community, was something which was an important integral part of a modern, inclusive and tolerant 21st century City, and Newry was proud to have such a vibrant community in the fabric of its civic life, Cllr Feehan stated.
The Mayor announced funding of £4,000 from Newry & Mourne District Council for the Newry Rainbow Community towards the set-up and running costs of a drop-in centre stating that he hoped such a visible presence in Newry City would be a huge boost to LGBT people across the entire Newry & Mourne district.
