Clanrye Group teamed up with Newry District Electoral Area Forum (DEA) on a project which saw an area at the bottom of Doran's Hill in Newry rejuvinated with planters and a bench.

The Community Project was part of the DEA Reimaging Newry Initiative, Clanrye Group’s Regener8 participants and the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme worked together bring this project to fruition and is a great example of how working together can bring about great changes locally.

The Initiative, which began in September 2020 involved a litter pick of the area with overgrown weeds, nettles and trees cut back and cleared away. The young people flattened the area for two flower planters and a bench whilst clearing and painting the wall.

Councillor Gary Stokes, Chair of Newry DEA stated “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Regener8 staff and volunteers involved in this excellent initiative.  Over several months these volunteers worked together to improve an area of the City that had become overgrown and unsightly. This project has added a vibrancy to the area and space that can be used by the whole community.  It is a great example of what can be achieved when we work together to refocus our priorities towards supporting communities and people to be proud of where the live and work.”

Regener8 is a Personal Youth Development Programme (PYDP) funded and managed by International Fund for Ireland and managed by Rural Action. The programme supports young people within the age range of 16-25 who are not in education, employment or training, and who live within the Newry, Mourne and Down area, Banbridge or Markethill. It is a cross community programme which focuses on peace and reconciliation. It aims to develop young people's skills and qualifications to help them move into employment whilst providing opportunities to engage with the local community.
