Crime prevention officers Paula Nicholl and Shell Wilson explained how the scam operates: “In the instance reported to us, staff of business premises were asked to change amounts of money into notes of different denominations.
The fraudsters then confused staff and gained more money than was handed over. “We are advising all business people – not just banks and building societies - to be on the alert. Carefully count any money that is offered to you and keep it in your possession.
If the ‘customer’ claims to have changed their mind and asks for the original notes back, insist on getting your money – and counting it – before agreeing. “Shopkeepers could also decide not to offer money-changing services to people they do not know – leave that to the banks.” Anyone who requires further advice should contact the crime prevention officers on 0845 600 8000.
