Ammunition Technical Officers have carried out a controlled explosion on an unexploded World War II mortar found in Warrenpoint yesterday afternoon. Police had received a report of a suspicious object at Seafields in the town and residents were asked to leave their homes for several hours.

Inspector Porter said: “Just before 3.20pm today, Tuesday 25th April, police received a report that a suspicious object had been discovered in the Seafields area of Warrenpoint. 

“Local officers attended the scene along with Ammunition Technical Officers (ATO) and residents were evacuated from their homes in order to ensure their safety.

“Following examination, it was confirmed that the object was an unexploded World War II long range mortar. A controlled explosion was carried out and residents were able to return home by 7.00pm.

Inspector Porter thanked the public for their cooperation, which allowed them to bring the security alert to a swift conclusion.
