Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is aiming to enhance the cleanliness and appearance of public spaces across the district with a £1.2m investment.
The investment combines £500,000 in annual revenue funding for enhanced staffing and cleansing schedules with £700,000 in additional capital investment to upgrade the street cleansing fleet through the Council's Fleet Management Replacement Programme.
Following a major recruitment campaign to increase the District Cleansing team's capacity, the enhanced service will include routine street sweeping, litter picking and bin emptying on new cleansing frequencies. The team will also tackle fly-tipping and other environmental incidents with timely responses to maintain cleanliness across the district.

Seven new high-performance street cleansing vehicles have been procured, with their compact design allowing better access to residential areas. The vehicles will help crews tackle persistent issues including litter, dog fouling and chewing gum removal.
District Chairperson Councillor Philip Campbell said: "This is about more than just keeping our streets clean - it's about fostering pride in our communities, supporting wellbeing and investing in the people who live and work here. We are committed to delivering high-quality, responsive services that reflect the priorities of our residents. This investment forms part of the Council's broader ambition to build sustainable, connected and vibrant communities across the district."
The initial focus will be on raising cleansing standards across the district, followed by ongoing work to maintain those standards consistently.
