The Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson has delivered his Christmas Message. In it Cllr Michael Savage stresses the need to support those facing personal and financial hardship but also looks forward to what he calls a 'decade of opportunity'.
Christmas Message - Cllr Michael Savage
“As Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, I wish to take this opportunity at Christmas time to thank all those who have helped to make our district such a special place to live, work in and visit in 2022.
“When I took up my position as Chairperson in June, I spoke about Hope and Ambition through Growth as the theme for my year in office. And I have had the privilege of seeing at first hand the many charitable, community and voluntary organisations working across the district to improve the quality of life for many of our citizens.
“Whether it’s providing new community facilities, supporting our elderly to reduce isolation or keeping us safe, there is a warm, generous and compassionate spirit evident in many of the people I meet. It has been my honour to support and shine a light on your work, particularly in such difficult times.
“Now, more than ever we need to provide Hope, as we work together all year round to support the many families and individuals facing personal and financial hardship and challenges on a daily basis.
“Our work at Newry, Mourne and Down District Council involves supporting community organisations, through Financial Assistance Schemes, delivering vital funds on the ground, but also through major regeneration plans designed to deliver new growth and prosperity for generations to come.
“We are excited about the decade of opportunity ahead, supported through funding from the Belfast Region City Deal, enabling us to deliver ambitious, transformational projects. We are committed to regenerating our City, towns and villages which will act as a catalyst to create and sustain new jobs and increase visitors to our area.
“I have had the honour of visiting many of our local businesses and recognise the true entrepreneurial spirit evident within the business community. We will continue to empower and foster ambitious entrepreneurs and nurture our local small businesses to help them to succeed.
“We will continue to provide opportunities for business development within our district through local and international investment and cross-border initiatives, and we will proudly support our young people to enable them to access work by providing support and local opportunities.
“We will also continue to create epic events that support the growth of our tourism, whilst protecting our natural heritage.
“I am only too aware of the many challenges that lie ahead in 2023 but I do have hope having witnessed the determination and generosity of the people in this district time and time again.
“I would like to extend my gratitude to those that will be working over the Christmas Holiday period and those who give their time to help the homeless.
“As we prepare to welcome 2023, on behalf of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council I would like to wish each and every one of you a Happy Christmas and a New Year in which we continue to generate ‘Hope, Growth and Ambition’ together.”
