Carers from the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council area took part in a day of art, virtual reality and relaxation at Delamont Country Park on 29 September. The event was organised by the Council's Downpatrick, Rowallane and Slieve Croob District Electoral Area (DEA) Forums, in partnership with the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust's Carers' Support Department.

It was designed to recognise the contribution of unpaid carers and give them a break from their caring responsibilities, in a supportive and welcoming environment.

The morning began with a Mandala art workshop led by local artist Lise Curran, where participants could relax, express themselves and learn new artistic techniques.

Carers then boarded the DigiBus to try virtual reality. They explored a range of immersive health and wellbeing experiences, as well as virtual tourism scenarios that allowed them to visit different locations without leaving the bus.

In the afternoon, residents from the Down Residential Project visited the country park to try the DigiBus and its virtual reality activities.

Slieve Croob DEA Chairperson, Councillor Alan Lewis, and Rowallane DEA Chairperson, Cllr Jonny Jackson, attended the event. They said carers play an essential role within communities, often dedicating countless hours to supporting loved ones.

They added: "This event was an opportunity to recognise their commitment, provide a meaningful break from their caring responsibilities and introduce them to new experiences that support health and wellbeing. We were delighted to work in partnership with the South Eastern Trust's Carers' Support Department and all those involved in making the day such a success."

The event highlighted the importance of supporting carers and making sure they have access to opportunities that promote wellbeing, social connection and respite.

Organisers thanked Lise Curran, the South Eastern Health Trust's Carers' Support Department, the DigiBus team and the participants, whose enthusiasm and engagement made the event a memorable and rewarding experience.
