Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has been forced to issue a statement following members of the public complaining about the state of some of the facilities at Newry Leisure Centre Centre. There also had been an issue with hot water in the showers. This week photographs of broken gym equipment and out of order machines from the centre were put on social media.
In today's statement the Council acknowledges issues with some gym equipment and say that some has already been repaired. They also say that the swimming pool which has been closed for many months is scheduled, as stated, to open once again in January 2025.
The statement said "All faults have been reported to the service provider, who is actively working on a repair schedule. Repairs are subject to the availability of bespoke replacement parts, but progress is being made, with some equipment already fixed. Council staff are on hand to assist gym users by suggesting alternative exercises while certain equipment remains unavailable.
"There is also good news for customers following a recent issue with the hot water in the showers, which has now been resolved."
On the ongoing upgrade and repair works at Newry Leisure Centre, especially the swimming pool the statement adds: "Repair works to the swimming pool hall and village changing areas are advancing as scheduled. Significant progress has been achieved, with all tiles in both pools now replaced. The hydraulic ram within the movable floor of the main pool has been successfully repaired and reinstalled. These milestones pave the way for the next phase of the project, which involves refilling the pools with water.
"Work on floor tile replacement throughout the pool hall walkways and changing areas is continuing, alongside essential maintenance to the pool hall, health suite, and plant room equipment. The Council confirms that the project remains on track for phased reopening in January 2025."
The statement concludes "The Council extends its gratitude to users for their patience and continued support during this period of improvement works, reaffirming its dedication to providing high-quality services at Newry Leisure Centre."
