Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Glyn Hanna, is encouraging local businesses to register their interest in taking part in the Make it Local marketing campaigns, designed to showcase local enterprise, boost trade and encourage residents and visitors to shop, dine and spend within the district.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is inviting local businesses to register their interest in its Make it Local Christmas campaign, with expressions of interest closing at 5pm next Friday 9 October 2026. The campaign aims to give businesses a boost during the festive shopping season and encourage residents and visitors to shop, dine and spend in the district.

Make it Local is designed to showcase local enterprise and celebrates the people behind the businesses and the products and services they provide and the Council is encouraging enterprises from all sectors to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to take part.

The latest promotion follows recent initiatives supporting hospitality, retail, personal services and tourism. Businesses that take part will gain increased visibility, with opportunities to reach new audiences through social media promotion, targeted advertising, and print and outdoor campaigns. They will also have access to thematic photography and video features.

Although the next campaign will focus on Christmas, those who express an interest may also be considered for future Make it Local campaigns. The Council says this allows a broad range of enterprises, from high street retailers, cafes and restaurants to artisans, service providers and start-ups, to benefit from free promotion and support.

Council Chairperson, Councillor Glyn Hanna, said: "The Christmas period is one of the most important trading times of the year for many local businesses."

He said the initiative gives businesses a platform during the festive season. "We want to give every business the chance to be part of this campaign and share their story with the wider community. Whether you are long-established or just starting out, this is an opportunity to be seen, celebrated and supported."

Cllr Hanna added: "The festive season presents a valuable opportunity for businesses to connect with customers, attract new audiences and showcase what makes them unique. By taking part in the Make it Local Christmas campaign, businesses can increase their visibility, build brand awareness and strengthen their connection to the community."

Submitting an EOI does not guarantee selection. Participants will be chosen based on geographical spread, sector variety and the uniqueness of their offering, to help create a rich and representative campaign.

Businesses can complete the EOI form, learn more about the initiative and view highlights from previous campaigns at newrymournedown.gov.uk/make-it-local, or by emailing business@nmandd.org.
