Following on from our article earlier this week regarding our understanding that the Tourist Office at Bagenal's Castle had closed, we have received a very short email today from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to tell us that the facility is actually open!
The message stated "Newry Visitor Information Centre is open and there are no plans to change the current service provision." We had asked them several questions on the matter from mid March without success.
Several readers have contacted us this week reinforcing our understanding and claiming they were told by Council staff that indeed the facility for tourists had closed. One caller spoke of being put through to Newcastle Tourist Centre but it appears as far as Council headquarters are concerned it is business as usual at the Visitor Information Centre in Newry.
On a slight aside the Council have got planning permission this month for painted wall signage on the side of Bagenal's Castle that says in large letters "Newry and Mourne Museum" along with an aluminium wall panel. The wall sign doesn't appear to include any reference to the Tourist Office!
