A new revitalised Newry Market could be on the cards if plans by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council come to fruition. The council are currently seeking input from third party organisations, businesses, community groups and individuals who are interested in collaborating with the Council in revitalising the historic market.
Currently Newry Market at John Mitchel Place is open on Thursdays and Saturdays with a variety of stalls from clothes to gardening to music to bric a brac. A monthly Artisan Market also takes place, the next one being this Sunday 10 September. On top of this regular Street Feasts also are based at the venue and a Record Fair is also popular.
In the past the market has been used for events as varied as film showings, farmers markets, drama performances, concerts and even treasure hunts but in recent years these type of events have been few and far between and the regular weekly market seems to have lost its draw to the public, so any revitalisation would be most welcome for Newry City.
You need to be quick though as they will only accept Expressions of interest (EOI) on ‘Council’s EOI Form’ which you need to request by tomorrow, Friday 8 September. The closing date for submission of completed form though gives you a little longer with deadline Friday 29 September at 12pm.
