At tonights February Council meeting Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has finalised the district rate for the upcoming financial year, setting it at 6.41%.

For the 2024/2025 period, the Domestic Rate stands at 0.4676 pence. For a property valued at £133,000*, this equates to an annual increase of £37.46 or £3.12 per month. The Non-Domestic District Rate for 2024/25 is 29.0334 pence. Residents' rates comprise the District Rate, determined by the Council, and the Regional Rate, to be set by the Northern Ireland Executive.

Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Councillor Valerie Harte, emphasised the role of the District Rate in funding essential services and projects aimed at enhancing the district's economy and residents' well-being. She acknowledged the economic challenges facing the local authority and highlighted the balanced approach taken to maintain service provision while striving for financial efficiency.

The Council's efforts in addressing climate change were also underscored, with initiatives such as a Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy, a Biodiversity Strategy, and a Local Climate Adaptation Plan being developed to mitigate its impacts and promote sustainable development.

Various projects aimed at city and town regeneration, such as the installation of public charging points for electric vehicles and environmental improvement schemes, were mentioned as part of the Council's ongoing efforts to stimulate economic growth.

Furthermore, the Council reiterated its commitment to promoting tourism, supporting local businesses, and addressing health inequalities within the district through initiatives like the Physical Activity Referral Scheme.

Looking ahead, the Council plans to collaborate with local communities to develop community trails and implement a new Sports Development and Wellbeing strategy to enhance outdoor accessibility and support sports clubs.

In conclusion, Councillor Valerie Harte expressed confidence in the Council's ability to navigate financial challenges and deliver services that meet local needs. "

Cllr Harte said “While Newry, Mourne and Down District Council faces the same financial challenges as all other Northern Ireland local councils, the Council’s collaborative approach with partners and communities offers a path to redesigning and delivering services that are responsive to local needs.  We look forward to delivering on important benefits for our district and are confident that we will adapt to new opportunities and challenges as they emerge, all with the key objective of improving the lives and livelihoods of the people who live and work here.”
