The large shed on the Albert Basin site in Newry is to be demolished. The Newry, Mourne and Down Council facility was used to store council equipment and other materials but a fire in May 2021 damaged the facility extensively. The asbestos roof of the property was badly damaged in the blaze which was believed to have been started deliberately. A fire also occured at the site in 2012.

The demolition information is contained in the Agenda of tonights Sustainability and Environment Committee meeting.

An action sheet on Christmas illuminations explained that Kevin Scullion Assistant Director Facilities Management and Maintenance has confirmed the facility is to be demolished and that all stored illuminations will be destroyed.

Plans are underway to build a 15 acre city park on the site which would have necessitated the removal of the facility in any case. It's not known when the building will be demolished.
