Councillors are being asked to approve an amended design for the front of the proposed Theatre/ Conference Centre on the site of the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre.

It follows concerns from the Historic Environment Division (HED) regarding the planning application submitted by the Council for a new four-storey theatre and conference centre extension to Newry Town Hall in March 2023. Concern has also been expressed by the public about the demolition of the existing frontage of the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre.
The HED were uncomfortable with the most recent red brickwork design submitted and they suggested that Council should llustrate a different external finish, i.e., white/off white brickwork instead of red. The latest design has come a long way from earlier proposed designs, particularly a grey and mustard design that some compared to a farm shed. What remains the same is a large door necessary for loading/ unloading stage items etc.

The new design is up for approval at this weeks Strategy, Policy and Resources meeting on Thursday 14 December. If approved the amended elevations would be formally submitted to the planning department. The Consultant team would also have to update and issue revised proposals which will delay receipt of planning approval and increase the Consultants fee.
HED have replied favourably concerning the new design saying "The consensus on the change to white brick is that it is an improvement as it ties in much better with the rendered and light stone buildings along Kildare St / Bank Parade / Sugar Island".
