Newry city Councillor Roisin Mulgrew has confirmed that she has contacted the Councils Director Of Neighbourhood Services asking that a request from environmental groups to delay grass cutting in further to allow pollination by bees to take place.
The Councillor explained the rationale behind her support for the request, “Obviously road safety is paramount but most of the grass verges which are the responsibility of Council to maintain do not inpact negatively on traffic sightlines, such a simple initiative would be hugely beneficial to protecting the bee population which is vital in terms of pollination of our native trees, wild flowers and plants”.
The Councillor also highlighted another issue that had been encountered by some community activists who had been involved in litter picks.“The task of picking the litter was not made easy as grass cutting had taken place in some areas without waste being removed. This resulted in litter being shredded into tiny pieces which were incredibly difficult to collect and most certainly a real risk to pets and wildlife. I fully appreciate that we are in difficult and different times but again I have raised this issue with the Director as I believe this is an issue for both the environment and animal welfare”.
Praising local communities for their efforts in working together to help keep their areas clean, tidy and safe, Cllr Muldrew said, “There have been terrific examples throughout the area of communities leading the way in keeping their areas tidy, clean and safe.
"I myself had the pleasure of over the past four weeks being involved with local community groups, Ógra Shinn Féin and the Toale/Harte Cumann in a major litter pick throughout the Fathom area. Well done to all involved in such positive community based activities”.
